COVID-19 Pandemic negatively affected many children’s mood and education, according to parents

Child Mind Institute survey explores traumatic events, treatment, impacts of the COVID pandemic, and the strategies families use to cope with these pressures

New York, NY, October 10, 2022 – A new Child Mind Institute survey sponsored by Blue Shield of California with data collection by Ipsos among 3,200 parents of children ages 24 and younger finds that nearly three times as many parents say their child struggled in school during 2020-2021 than before the pandemic (31% vs. 11%). Four in 10 parents say that their child’s mood became worse during the pandemic, with increased anxiety and increased stress as the most common issues reported.

The poll also finds that 31% of parents say their child has experienced a traumatic event. However, fewer than half (45%) say that their pediatrician, family doctor, or mental health clinician has ever asked if their child has had stressful or traumatic experiences.
