WHO: Refugees, migrants face barriers to antibiotic access

A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that, while data on antibiotic use and access among the world's migrants and refugees are scarce, multiple factors may be keeping these vulnerable populations from obtaining and using antibiotics appropriately.

Excess ω-6 fatty acids influx in aging drives metabolic dysregulation, electrocardiographic alterations, and low-grade chronic inflammation

Maintaining a balance of ω-6 and ω-3 fatty acids is essential for cardiac health. Current ω-6 and ω-3 fatty acids in the American diet have shifted from the ideal ratio of 2:1 to almost 20:1; while there is a body of evidence that suggests the negative impact of such a shift in younger organisms, the underlying age-related metabolic signaling in response to the excess influx of ω-6 fatty acids is incompletely understood.

Research finds clothes dryers are an overlooked source of airborne microfibers

It is well known that washing clothes can release a large number of microfibers into wastewater, but it is unclear whether drying of clothes would have any impact on the environment. A pilot study by scientists from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) reports that a single clothes dryer can discharge up to 120 million microfibers annually—1.4 to 40 times of that from washing machines. To control the release of these harmful airborne microfibers, the team suggested that additional filtration systems should be installed for dryer vents as soon as possible.

Food Intolerance: The Role of Histamine

Histamine is a natural amine derived from L-histidine. Although it seems that our knowledge about this molecule is wide and diverse, the importance of histamine in many regulatory processes is still enigmatic.

Metro Microbes: Microbiomes of Public Transit & Urban Spaces

Microbes don’t generally endear themselves to most of us from the handrail of the subway, but some researchers have come to know them all the same. The MetaSUB consortium, co-founded by Christopher Mason and Evan Afshin at Weill Cornell in 2015, is one example of a growing body of microbiologists interested in the smallest inhabitants of our urban spaces. MetaSUB currently coordinates across more than 100 cities to descend upon metros, buses and other busy places to sample high-traffic surfaces for metagenomic testing. This global subterranean invasion occurs on all 7 continents on precisely the same day each year (June 21st to be exact), a collaboration of Herculean proportions.

Protein restriction can be effective in combating obesity and diabetes, study suggests

Cutting protein intake can help control metabolic syndrome and some of its main symptoms, such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension), according to a study conducted by researchers in Brazil and Denmark to compare the effects of protein and calorie restriction diets in humans. An article reporting the study is published in the journal Nutrients.
